Artist: James Wilkes

"A death mask is a wax or plaster cast made of a person’s face following death. Death masks may be mementos of the dead, or be used for creation of portraits"- Wikipedia.

Can a death mask show the true soul of the subject? Like your life flashing before you the moments before death combined with the eyes recording the last thing you see, like a photo. Probably not but through my Gaddafi Death Mask I investigate who Mummar really was. A freedom fighting revolutionary who brought the 3rd stage of democracy to the people of Libya? Or the totalitarian dictator the media and western governments portray him to be.

Bold and fantastic pieces by the artist. The detail in the sculpted features is so life-like it seems as if the piece will move on it's own.
